Entertaining Websites?
July 20th, 2004
Back when I was in college it seemed that every single time I sat down to browse different websites I would find something really fun and interesting. These days I find it difficult to find the same types of websites and I am stuck with just CNN.com and Slashdot and even those offer little to pique my interest. I suppose all the excitement of reading about something on the web ended the day they announced the extremely hyped "IT" after a year of speculation. And it turns out to be the Segway was just a standing moped. Big Whoop! If I am going to travel I sit down, thank you. My $300 bike will be just fine. But the point is, the web has been disappointing and I would like to find a few good sites I have never seen before...
I was digging around some old bookmarks last night and came across uberGeek. The site has a great intro and a recently a funny page for Geek Codeblurbs. The creator of the site, Chris Hill, does an amazing amount of work for the site and he is very talented.
Another fun site is Homestar Runner which features flash cartoons. That site is hilarious, especially the emails by Strong Bad, the overpowerfing character on the website. There is a ton of content which would literally keep you busy for a week and it will bring you back to watch again. Apparently this site has been around for quite a long time and the 3 people producing the site no longer have regular jobs. They basically sell Homestar merchandise and produce new content to pay their bills. To me that is the dream of the internet. Sit at home playing with the computer to make funny cartoons and money just comes in.
Along the lines of Geek entertainment, there is Red vs Blue, a website which features short films made in a unique way. The popular game Halo is used to create the short films with voice-overs and sounds effects to fulfill the creative scenarios the put the characters through. Normally a new short is released each week and for a while at work we would gather around someone's computer and watch them. The humor put into the stories is top notch. If you have not seen it, it is worth a look.
If you like to watch... well, you can at Text America, a website which works with those fancy new camera phones. People create accounts and start feeding the site with photos. You can go to the site and browse for hours, seeing what people are doing and making comments on the photos. All in all it is a very interesting site and I suppose the appeal is there is constantly new content. Just pull it up anytime.
Now I am looking for more websites to put on my list. Do you have any suggestions?! I am dying over here. I need something else to look at as eat my lunch or as I browse websites while flipping channels on the TV. What are your favorite sites for entertainment?
