Free Audio Book Downloads

October 13th, 2004

A week ago I purchased a brand spanking new iPod mini because my current work assignment requires a longer drive. To keep me occupied I figured I would look at the audio books in the iTunes Store and I was pleasantly surprised there was actually a good amount of free content. Perhaps it is an unusual case but there are 9/11 Commission hearings by most officials available as free downloadss. At the moment I am listening to Colin Powell. I listened to Rice a lot the other day. It is great to get beyond the sound bytes that you get on the TV news so that I can get a much clearer perspective of what happened and what people were trying to do.

I also bought some books which were not free, such as a Spanish lesson and Sun Tzu's Art of War. I have the Art of War in hardcover but being able to listen while I drive is priceless. Next I would like to get audio books by Colin Powell and Richard Clarke. Those two men have been very dedicated in their work and have lived through some very critical points of history. I have read other autobiographies and now with an iPod I hope to start listening to them.

Purchase IBM Via Voice Word Processing program. Load it and go through the "Load Voice" step of setting up your voice or any other person's voice in your data base. Audio Book. Then go to your favorite free download of books by your author and download the txt form. Then open the txt document with 'write' after you start an audio dictation in your 'wp'. Copy the txt to the wp and save it. Click on it and let it play back through your voice or some one else's. Load audiograbber (audiograbber.de.) and record this voice to mp3, wma, by the line in sampling feature. Then load the mp3 in ipod to listen to your favorite books.

I would like to acquire some audio books for study and this sounds like a good way to do this.

If you guys are willing to pay a little, try using one of those rental services. I use Jiggerbug because they 'rent' you downloads but once you put them on your MP3 player, you can keep them forever - unless you run out of space. And they're collection is AWESOME - all the new stuff and if they don't have what you want, they'll get it.
And if you aren't willing to pay, one *might* sign up for their free trial, download, and then cancel.
