A Directory Server is Coming to the Apache Foundation

January 25th, 2005

I cannot count how many times I have tried and failed to use OpenLDAP for my needs. It is just too much of a pain to set up and despite every effort to make it work I end up just scrapping it again. So I am very excited to see The Apache Software Foundation is introducing Apache DS 0.8 to the Apache incubator. I am offering my support to whatever work is needed to get the project passed the incubator and into release quality status.

With a decent directory server I hope to configure other open source software like PHPNuke, Jabber and phpBB so that I have a central directory for each system. And once I have that I could write an interface to control who has access to what. I can also set it up so that if someone posts a reply to a thread on the message board I could send a Jabber message to the person who started the thread if they are online. And if a new story is posted to a PHPNuke site I could alert all users with an Jabber message if their profile indicates they want the notices. And when all of the contact information is in a central location all I need to is set up events and event handlers to activate the notification system. I cannot wait till Apache DS is ready.
