Eight Legs Podcast: Virtual Server

December 2nd, 2005

A new podcast is up! In this show James and I discuss Microsoft Virtual Server. [mp3 download]

I have been making use of Virtual Server a lot lately and have found it to be a great asset. I love how I can take one server and turn it into 3 without having to maintain additional hardware. It also gives me the impression that the servers are now a sort of "throw away" resource. In order to set up a new server I do not need to purchase a new piece of hardware or take over another server. I can just take a base image of a prepped virtual instance and start using it. Then I can use it for a few days or weeks and then when I am done evaluating some software I can "throw away" the server.

Now that .NET 2.0 has been released, I expect that in about 6 months I may see updates for it and eventually a .NET 2.1 or .NET 3 Beta release. When those come out I am sure I will replicate one of the virtual instances hosting the ASP.NET applications I work on and will apply the updates to them before actually touching the real projects.
