Open with Notepad2, using Registry Hack

May 25th, 2006

The following settings can be dropped into a file named open with notepad2.reg and run against the registry. Once done it will allow you to open files directly with Notepad2, an excellent text editor with rich color coding support. It is also a .NET 2.0 application so you can make it your new de facto standard text editor on all of your Windows systems. I often work on mutliple WinXP and Windows Server 2003 machines and having a consistent and powerful text editor readily available is a helpful asset.

To make the registry settings below work, you must set the path to NotePad2.exe. I always through it in the Program Files folder so this will work univerally for each machine I use.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\Shell\Open with Notepad2]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\Shell\Open with Notepad2\command]
@="C:\\Program Files\\Notepad2\\NotePad2.exe \"%1\""
