I have a page on MySpace.com. How about you?
August 11th, 2006I updated my page on MySpace.com. It is a major pain to style because it is really a hack instead of a supported feature. But in order to be cool these days you gotta be on MySpace. Chad, this means you.
Actually, I would prefer it if MySpace did not suck due to horrible semantic markup and horrendous stability issues. The usability is also equally disappointing. To style the page you cannot use a hash symbol in your CSS to target a tag, and to actually add style you have to sneek a style tag into your profile fields. There are actually very few ID or class attributes anyway. And since you cannot use a hash symbol you cannot properly set colors with the hex code. You simply rely on the fact that when you leave out the hash symbol before the hex code that the browsers assume you meant to put it in there. Such a hack.
I would love it is if MySpace functioned more like the holy grail of website skinning, CSS Zen Garden. I have read the book which explains many of the great styles which have been introduced on the site the past few years. Styles like Mozart or Leggo My Eggo show the possiblities with CSS while the semantic markup remains the same.

I type this out of real-life experience: you are too cool for myspace, sir! Don't be so modest!
