Ruby on Rails Revolution

For a bit over 2 months Dave Thomas has been writing a book on Ruby on Rails. And even though it will not be published for a while yet, he has made it available in digital form as a beta. And over the weekend he had over 1000 orders. He is calling it a revolution.

Dave has been a major voice in the Java community, so when he is able to raise such interest in a non-Java technology I would say that is significant. I do not think Java will die simply because RoR is becoming popular, but it will put Java on a diet. It should be for the better. In a couple of years once the Apache Harmony project starts producing Java runtimes for multiple platforms it should really bring new life back to Java. It is too bad Sun could not figure this out themselves years ago. .NET would have been dead in it tracks.
